Working From the Comfort of Your Couch

Posted on April 05, 2011 in Workplace by Laurie

I came across this story today via Mashable that discusses how working from home is becoming more and more common these days. This immediately caught my attention, mostly because we’re currently working on the May/June 2011 diversity issue which includes everything from generational differences in the workplace to new technologies that make the office environment more efficient.

It’s clear that the future of the workplace is changing. With the advent of impressive video conferencing and remote access options, employees are no longer confined to the nine-to-five traditional job in a cubicle setting. In fact, the number of people who work from the comfort of their home or on-the-go is growing… and growing fast.

Here are a few of the survey findings:

  • Approximately 60 percent of the companies surveyed already allow employees to work remotely.
  • Of those surveyed, 75 percent of decision makers believe working remotely is more accepted.
  • More than 55 percent of decision makers believe remote workers are more productive.

I encourage you to read more of the survey results and reflect on your own personal preferences. How would you respond to the questions posed?

For those interested in downloading the full report, you can find it on the Skype site.

It will be interesting to see how this trend plays out. Facilities professionals and space managers have been talking about new ways of working forever. With the confluence of these new technologies, the increasing demand to reduce space costs, and new environmental incentives for telecommuting and home based work however, it might actually start to stick.

Generally, keep your upholstered pieces subdued but try for the correct
style (or a modified version) of the window treatments and case pieces.
Wing chairs have been popular for 300 years, but make sure yours are
comfortable to sit on before you decide you have to have them. Our
ancestors had much better posture and liked sitting very straight.
Classic styles of modern furniture keep the lines of the old, but have a
better slant to the backs. The real effect of the room can be created
by how you decorate your walls, floors and windows, and by using
    accessories creatively.
