Don’t let writing get in the way of a good story
As an editor, I appreciate good writing but at the same time, I will never pass up a good story.
I’ve been asked many times, “Where do you find the stories for each issue of the magazine?” My answer is never the same.
Sometimes it’s about being at the right place at the right time. Other times a story is developed after a conversation, e-mail exchange or upon reading an article on an intriguing topic.
Then there are those times when I just get lucky and individuals send me a winning story idea.
I always look forward to reading story pitches. Sure they may not all make the cut, but they all have the potential to make a spark–allowing a subsequent idea to be born.
So my message to you today is: don’t be bashful. Share your ideas (whether it’s for an article, a report, a blog or simply an e-mail). You never know who will be thinking the same way you do or who will be inspired by your words.
As far as writing? My tip is to just let your words flow and stay within your comfort zone.
So many people are surprised to learn that they are actually good writers once they stop trying so hard to be perfect. Remember just as there are many styles of clothing and art, there are many styles of writing–each appealing to different people.
If spelling and grammar aren’t your forte, find a word fanatic to check your work for you (yes it’s actually fun for us!).

So no more excuses. I am currently taking submissions for our issues on workplace diversity, sustainability and the modern workplace.
