Making peace with your to-do list
Ah, the lovely to-do list. We all have one–whether it’s on a note stuck to your computer screen, written on your hand, typed up in your iPhone, or even a big mess in your head.
It sure is a nice feeling to cross items off that list.
Although I have noticed that for every item crossed off another comes along to take its place. Sound familiar?
Sure it’s no fun coming to the realization that your list will NEVER end. But that’s life, it keeps going picking up new opportunities and challenges as we travel through it each day–whether we’re ready or not.
It all comes down to your attitude and what you CHOOSE to pay attention to–keeping focus on time, priorities, people and costs.
In the article, “How to Get Through Your To-do List,” I found some helpful tips on how to remain openminded and reduce stress when confronted with a never-ending bombardment of tasks.
Did you know that something as simple as not numbering your to-do items can make a big difference? One other thing that I use as a guideline is “Will this matter a month from now? Will anyone benefit from it? Will anyone notice?” If the answer is no, that’s a green light to reprioritize (or for my fellow perfectionists out there, to give yourselves a break).
Now if you excuse me, I must cross out “write blog entry” from my to-do list and replace it with “have a great weekend, you deserve it.”
